On November 25th Reading Scouting’s Troop 702 held an Eagle Scout Court of Honor to celebrate six
members who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Thomas O’Brien, Wyatt Meyers, Brendan Manning,
Sean Murphy, Victor Villarroel, and Nicholas Belous each earned Scouting’s highest honor.
To become an Eagle Scout, Scouts must complete more than three hundred twenty-five requirements
designed to mold them into worthy citizens for our community. They must earn at least twenty-one
merit badges, fourteen of which are required. They have spent more than twenty days and nights
camping outdoors. They must demonstrate their leadership capabilities, serving the Troop in a
leadership position for a total of sixteen months.
In addition, they must help their community through outstanding service and conservation projects for at least thirteen hours, not to mention the time spent on their own Eagle project. Each Scout must complete a service project that they plan, organize, lead and manage that benefits their community.
These six Eagle Scouts organized projects that included: landscaping at St. Athanasius Church; building moveable shelving and storage for the Reading Food Pantry; creating a new property access and parking space at the Parker Tavern; building a new outdoor, life-size, modular manger for St. Athanasius Church; constructing two recycle/compost stations for Birch Meadow School; and, building twenty little libraries for the REAL program in Lynn.
