I am writing to express my strong support for Melissa Murphy and Chris Cook in their candidacies for the Select Board.
Although this letter is arriving a bit late (tomorrow is the election), I still want to share my endorsements and, most importantly, remind everyone to get out and vote.
Last year, I wrote an endorsement letter for Melissa, and you may recall that my theme centered around the qualities she brings as a mom to the board. I am pleased to report that she has lived up to those expectations. Melissa has consistently put the best interests of Reading first. She has kept the peace on the board, addressed the challenges and priorities presented to her, asked tough questions about the financial health of the town, and always avoided personal attacks. She has earned the respect of the community and demonstrated an unwavering commitment to problem-solving. Reading deserves a leader like Melissa, and I wholeheartedly support giving her the opportunity to continue serving.
While Chris Cook is a newcomer to Reading, I don’t view this as a disqualifying factor for his candidacy. In fact, I believe it should be considered a strength. Often in my work, we hire outside consultants for their fresh perspectives—although they may not be familiar with the specific organization, they bring new ideas and are able to look at issues without being clouded by historical references. Chris’ experience in the financial sector, both in private and public banking, positions him perfectly as the town faces what are likely to be budgetary challenges, especially with three nearby communities having recently voted down overrides and debt exclusions.
I encourage you to join me in voting for Melissa Murphy and Chris Cook for Select Board on April 8th. We need strong, forward-thinking leaders to help guide the town through what will likely be some rough waters ahead. Melissa and Chris are those leaders.

Well the Reading political machine got their Murphy back in but must be unhappy that Cook got trounced as did Guarino for School Committee, once again. And recap’s “editor” and his wife failed to be voted in as Town Meeting members just like the previous several years, too bad. I hope that the editor enjoys his final year on the Select Board.
