In February 2024, Richard Nelson was appointed as the new Deputy Fire Chief of the Reading Fire Department, following the retirement of Deputy Chief Anthony DelSignore. Nelson, a veteran firefighter who began his career with the department in 1997, brings extensive experience to the role, having served as a captain since 2016. His transition into the deputy chief position was seamless, as he worked closely with DelSignore to ensure continuity in leadership. Nelson’s deep knowledge of the department and commitment to public safety make him a strong fit to help lead Reading’s fire services, continuing a tradition of dedicated service to the community.
Fast forward to last night’s Select Board meeting, it was made official that Richard Nelson was Reading’s next Fire Chief
My choice and the choice of the selection committee is Richard Nelson, hes currently our assistant chief. He’s been with the department for 28 years, he grew up in Reading, is extremely well qualified and he received the highest score in the assessment center
Matt Kraunelis – Town Manager
Speaking next would be outgoing Fire Chief, Gregory Burns. Chief Burns has carved a remarkable path in public service, leading the town’s fire department with a blend of courage and compassion. Born and raised with a deep sense of duty, Burns joined the firefighting ranks years ago, steadily rising through dedication and skill to assume the role of chief. His tenure has been defined by decisive leadership, notably during the 2024 wildfire crisis, where his swift burn bans safeguarded our community.
Rick is a fantastic leader of the department, I know he will really move the department into the future… Rick has given back to the community with many years in scouting and an all around good person. He is well respected by the department as you can see the turn out here.

After the Select Board gave their remarks, the following motion was read “Move to ratify the town managers appointment of Richard Nelson as Fire Chief”. The board then voted 5-0 making it official. After a long standing ovation for Richard Nelson, it was his turn to speak:
I am absolutely humbled and honored with the trust that has been bestowed upon me with this vote. It’s not lost on me. I just want to say thank you to my family, I wouldn’t be here without them…. I love working with the town staff and this department, its truly something I absolutely cherish and were lucky to have them here. The staff is just so wonderful.
