In the first game of the Reading Rockets 2023 Season, you couldn’t have scripted a better ending last night if only it had ended the way it should have.
The game started off with the Rockets in the hole by a 14-0 deficit into the 2nd quarter but Reading managed to come back with 7 points before halftime with a touchdown run by D’Von Burcy. Taking the Rockets into halftime down 14-7.
Reading came out in the 3rd and tied it at 14-14 with another touchdown run by D’Von Burcy. Melrose countered though with a score of their own, taking them to a 21-14 lead by the end of the 3rd quarter.
With the clock running down in the 4th quarter with just 5 seconds to go, Rockets rookie quarterback Jack Murphy, launched a Hail Mary into the end zone for a 45 yard touchdown pass to Brady Comenos with 0 seconds left on the clock. Unfortunately, their scoring would end there though as a Melrose penalty made an easy 2 point conversion call to win it, ended with Reading stopped short at the 1 on a rushing play up the middle. For a final score of Melrose 21 – Reading 20.
The Reading Rockets will play Boston College High next Thursday, September 14th in Boston.
