2023 marks the 85th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, on which the Nazis coordinated systematic attacks against Jews throughout Germany. In consideration of this anniversary and the uptick of antisemitic incidents worldwide, The Reading Public Library is honored to welcome Gayle Saks, whose family was directly affected by Nazi persecution. After four of her older siblings were deported to a Belgian concentration camp, Gayle’s mother, Fadja Wittelsohn, hid for two years in the basement of a private residence in Bruxelles. Her view of the world was limited to feet walking past the one window they had, where they lived in constant fear of being found.
Gayle discusses the importance of telling her mother’s story while navigating though the sensitive and complicated terrain of passing the torch as the keeper of this critical piece of cultural history.
