Walking is the most popular exercise for seniors for a good reason. Just to mention a few benefits, it’s been shown to strengthen muscles, lower risk of heart disease, and improve balance.
Reading Elder Services had these benefits in mind when it applied for and received a “Keep Moving” grant in 2016 to set up a walking group for Reading Seniors. They tapped the Walkable Reading Committee for a volunteer walk leader to get things started and the Reading Ramblers program became official that November.
Regular attendees note many additional benefits. There’s a feeling of camaraderie. Lots of information is shared, be it local politics, events, life experiences, or leads on hiring professionals for jobs around the house. They keep each other coming every week. In addition walkers are discovering neighborhoods they haven’t explore before despite living in Reading for many years.
With the exception of the Covid months, and a remarkably few weather-related cancellations, the Ramblers have been walking the neighborhoods of Reading and nearby communities ever since.
Pleasantries publishes our schedule a month in advance and all are welcome to just show up at the appointed meeting spot any Tuesday at 10. Reading Ramblers Facebook page also has the whole month at a glance as well as up-to date changes. There is no fee and you can come as often or as seldom as you please.
